October Runs
I have been just awful about updating my blog and catching up on all my favorites out there in blogland. All I can say is that the start of the school year is keeping me awfully busy. Things have been going well on the work out front though, so I haven't totally fallen off the wagon. I've got the Reggae Run this weekend (yea for free beer and food!) and I'm working on coming up with a costume idea for the Run Like Hell. Any suggestions? Remember, I have to be able to run in this costume. Carrie and I were thinking about girly referee costumes, because it would be pretty easy to run in (black shorts, striped tshirt). We also (briefly) considered the Flinstones, mainly because I'd like to see my hubby dressed up as Fred or Barney! However, we had to dismiss this idea because we both really loved the Pebbles costume and not the others. So, help me out here people. I need costume ideas in the worst way!
I really don't like Ike
I'm not sure how it happened, but Hurricane Ike reared his ugly head this weekend . . . in Ohio! We experienced some crazy winds on Sunday and are now dealing with the damage left behind by the remnants of Ike. I have been without power for the past four days (yes, four entire days!), school was cancelled Monday and Tuesday, roads are closed, trees are down everywhere you look, gas stations and grocery stores are closed down (or out of food/gas); its really been a bit like the end of the world here. As Glam said on her blog, if its this bad here, what in the world are they going through in Texas??? The one positive to come out of all this craziness is that I "got" to clean out my fridge. That sucker is sparkling clean, but empty.
I haven't been able to work out much since Sunday morning when I ran the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. I have to say, this is one of my very favorite runs because there are just so many people there, all in support of a great cause. I've never seen so much pink in my life! I was very happy with my time (27:30) and even cooler than that is the fact that I saw my old track coach from high school. She is one impressive runner; she placed 2nd in the entire race with a time I can only dream of. And did I mention that she's a breast cancer survivor? She was an amazing coach and really furthered my love of running in high school, so I was thrilled when I recognized her at the front of the pack Sunday. I think its just so amazing that she's still excelling in running after battling cancer. I searched for her after the race so I could say hi and tell her how much I admire her, but I couldn't find her in the crowd of thousands.
So anyway, the next race on the agenda is the Reggae Run in early October. One montrously hilly course + free beer + free food = fun times!

A very slooow run
I came home from work today totally prepared to do my usual gym routine (run to the gym, lift, run home). I took the dog out, changed clothes, and laced up my running shoes. I was feeling great as I headed out the door . . . and that's when I noticed Scout. She was sitting by the door wearing her best "ooh ooh I wanna go, I wanna go, take me, take me, come on mom, take me for a run" look and seriously, it just about broke my heart. But I really wanted to get to the gym and lift so I left her sitting there, sad look and all. I hadn't made it out the door before I heard her whining, then as I exited the driveway I could hear her barking, and even still as I ran a few steps down the road I could see her in the front window, watching me run away as she whined and cried. I hesitated, feeling like the worst dog-mom in the world. So, you guessed it, I went back for her. And it was totally worth it. That dog was so damn excited to see me, I've never seen her tail wag so fast! I figured forget the gym, I'll run a few miles with the dog and then hop on the bike trainer when I get home. I was a happy camper.
However, my happiness quickly wore off when I realized she was in a sniffing mood today. I swear she must have stopped every five seconds to sniff, pee, pretend to pee, whatever. It was by far the slowest run Scout and I have ever done together. Even when we were actually running she was in some kind of slow motion mode; I'm not sure what was going on with her. I guess I'm still glad I gave in and took her with me, she sure is content now laying on the floor, all tuckered out. And really, a slow run is better than no run at all right?
Now its time for some dinner and I'm absolutely starving! The hubby is taking his turn on the bike trainer while I cook. The way we fight over that thing, I think maybe we should buy another one. His and her bike trainers :)

Cheetah Run
Sorry for the week long absence, it's been a crazy few days. Now that I've got some time I want to take a minute to recap the Cheetah Run 5k from last weekend, pictures and all. Basically, the run was . . . not so good. I've heard great things about this run; how much fun it is, how cool it is to run through the zoo, how great the shirts are, how it's an easy course. All false I tell you!
First of all, the shirt was crappy. It had one tiny little cheetah on the front, and that's all! When I think of all the cool graphics they could have come up with involving Cheetahs and cheetah print, it makes me want to cry. Good thing I didn't pay the extra ten bucks for a shirt, huh?
Secondly, the path through the zoo is teeny tiny and narrow so there was no room for all the runners to spread out for the first five to ten minutes, which totally threw off my time and prevented my sought after PR. We finished right about 28 or 29 minutes. I say "about" because I'm not entirely sure of my time due to the annoying fact that the run wasn't chip timed.
Finally, it most definitely was not an easy, or fun, course. There were lots of hills (which never equal fun in my book) and the course was basically the same loop repeated three times. Boring. Also, we couldn't really see any of the zoo animals from the path, although we sure could smell the giraffes. Ick.
I guess next year I'll know to save my thirty dollar entry fee for another race, I was sorely disappointed in this one. However, the hubby seemed to have a good time. Here is what he was taking pictures of while Darby and I were slugging up all those hills:

Yes, that's a rhino butt. He said he waited and waited for that thing to come out, but he finally just settled for a picture of its behind. He did manage to tear himself away from the rhino to get a picture of Darby and I crossing the finish line (I'm in the yellow):

Next on the race calender is the Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure. Gotta start picking out a very pink outfit!

itchy
Here's what I'm wondering. What is up with the Cincinnati area and our crazy, random insects? This summer I had to deal with the cicadas. A while back we had a bed bug scare (not me personally, thank goodness, but I remember hearing that a lot of people were dealing with them). And now? Itch Mites.
I really have no idea what these things are, I just know that I was at an outdoor party last weekend and several of us there got bitten. After the party I noticed I had a few HUGE bites that were itching like mad and not really going away. The one on my neck is so big, a student asked me if it was a hickey! Then a friend sent me a link saying there is a warning from the health department about these stupid bugs that hop off their tree leaves and munch on humans. Sure enough, that's what I'm dealing with. At least they aren't really harmful, they just itch. But let me just say, its bad. They itch like a mofo and I haven't found anything that helps. I'm really trying not to mess with them because the information I found said they would go away in 10 to 14 days if I don't scratch. I just don't know if I can make it another week . . .
But for now I'm off to distract myself with a little Ohio State football. The hubby and Scout are both wearing their OSU shirts, the beer is cold, and I think I smell some yummy snacks in the kitchen. Go Bucks!

Poochie Play Date
My friend (and fellow dog lover) Carrie and I took our doggies for a little outing yesterday. We were feeling like a walk so we headed to a nice park outside Cincinnati. The entire loop is over seven miles, and honestly we were thinking that we'd be able to walk the whole thing. Scout regularly runs a three mile loop with me, surely she could walk seven miles. I guess we didn't take the blistering heat into account, because we ended up only making it two miles before we turned back, putting as at a total of four whopping miles. It was unbelievably hot and the poor pooches were worn out!
Here's a pic of Scout and her best friend Maddie taking a little breather about halfway through our walk:

On the ride home we decided to stop for some ice cream. A soft serve cone for the humans and a "doggie bowl" for the pups. The doggie bowl consists of a bowl full of vanilla ice cream with three dog bones on top. I wish we had taken pictures of the girls eating their treats because it was highly entertaining! They both had ice cream dripping everywhere, and I think Scout managed to wolf hers down in about a minute. She also managed to roll around in something nasty during our walk . . . the stink was almost unbearable in the car. Really, I was embarrassed for her.
On the workout front, I managed to talk myself into a run after work today. Once I got going it went pretty well, even though I was totally exhausted from work. I'm feeling much more energetic now and I might even hop on the bike trainer for awhile. I love getting on that thing while I watch my nightly tv!

I need a nap
My first week back to school is over, and I'm too worn out to even come up with something to write about. I did manage to force myself to run and/or bike every night after work, which is a miracle as far as I'm concerned. After a summer full of relaxation, its no easy feat getting up at the crack of dawn, being "on" by 7am, and then being up on your feet all day.
BUT, its finally the weekend and I can relax a little. I've got some cleaning to do around the house this morning, then I'm hitting the gym, and then there's a party at my neighbors while the boys all draft their fantasy football teams. Fantasy football is so beyond my comprehension, but there will be wine so I'm good to go!
Everyone have a fantabulous weekend!
